Being mostly an industrial suburb, it is home to many large firms belonging to a wide range of industries. It also houses a school, the Rocklea State School, which was opened in 1885. This suburb recorded a population of 1255 at the 2011 Australian Census. Rocklea also hosts the Brisbane Markets, which is known for its flowers, fresh fruit and fresh vegetables. The current markets were established in 1964. They occupy a site of 100 hectares. Originally called Rocky Water Holes, this locality was renamed Rocklea with the opening of the railway. It has a train station on the Beenleigh line. The suburb is predominantly zoned for industrial land uses. Many of the Rocklea-based companies are part of the transport sector, with the close proximity to Archerfield Airport being an attractive feature. The suburb also hosts Dulux Group’s main paint manufacturing facility.
