Alberton is a quaint suburb in the city of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. The city has an approximate population touching 600 as per several census reports. The city is bordered by the Albert River, its tributary in the west and by the Logan River in the north. The area first witnessed European settlements in the year 1863 and the town reserve on the banks near the junction of the two rivers was built in the year 1865. Alberton got its first Lutheran Church in 1869 near the Lutheran Cemetery. The area was actually named Alberton after Prince Albert, the consort to Queen Victoria.
The popular ferry service across the river came into existence in 1870 and the first bridge was built in 1876 at Yatala. A German school was also built beside the church in the 1870s. The Alberton Provisional School opened in 1876 and this became the Alberton State School in 1884. The Gem Hotel was built before 1911 but was destroyed by a fire in 1933. It was rebuilt in the same year and is one of the most famous landmarks in the area. The economy of the suburb is majorly fueled by prawn farming and sugarcane plantations.
